DIY Disinfectant Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray
In light of the latest COVID-19 social distancing orders, and based on what I’m seeing across social media platforms, it seems like more and more folks are getting in their fitness at home right now.
So I figured there was no better time to share one of my favorite all-natural, homemade ‘green living’ hacks: an easy to make and amazing-smelling DIY Disinfectant Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray.
*Note that this spray can also be used to help disinfect other workout equipment like weights, resistance brands, and more!
• Small reusable spray bottle (2-4 oz size is plenty if you’ll just be using it for a yoga mat)
• Distilled water (enough to fill 3/4 of bottle you’ll be using)
• Witch Hazel (enought to fill 1/4 of the bottle you’ll be using)
*You can swap this out for white vinger if you prefer, your yoga mat spray just might not smell as nice
• Tea tree essential oil (2-3 drops)
*This is an antibacterial and antifungal oil, but if you don’t like the smell try swapping it out for lemongrass, eucalyptus, or pepeermint which also have antibacterial and antifungal properties.
• Jasmine essential oil (2-3 drops)
*I also like using lavender and orange for this yoga mat spray recipe or you can use your favorite-smelling essential oil.
• Funnel (optional)
• Microfiber towel (optional)
*Or other reusable towel to wipe off your mat
Step One: Remove the spray cap from the bottle and pour the witch hazel followed by the distilled water into the bottle, making sure to leave about 1/8 of empty space at the top (if you have a funnel this is the time to use it).
Step Two: Put 2-3 drops of the tea tree essential oil (or oil of your choosing with antibacterial/antifungal properties) followed by 2-3 drops of the jasmine essential oil (or oil of your choosing for smell) directly into the bottle’s mixture (I recommend NOT using a funnel for this in order to maximize how much oil makes it into the bottle).
Step Three: Put the spray cap on top of the bottle, twist it closed (make sure it’s tight enough so the yoga mat cleaning solution can’t leak out), and shake it until the solution is mixed.
To use, simply lay your yoga mat flat on the ground and give it 3-5 sprits of your new DIY Disinfectant Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray. Once you’ve sprayed it top to bottom, wipe down your yoga mat using a microfiber or other reusable cloth (I like microfiber becasue it’s super absobrant and picks up a lot more grime than cotton or paper). Flip your mat over and repeat.
After you’ve sprayed and wiped down both sides of your yoga mat be sure to let it dry for 5-10 mins ( I like to throw mine over the back of a chair or on my balcony’s railing) before rolling it up!
And there you have it, friends, your new DIY Disinfectant Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray…
